THIRTEEN

Kelsey and I catch the bus down to Maroochydore and get out near The Palace.

“I don’t think Kurt’s working today,” I explain to her. “But I do know both his home and mobile number.”

“Of course you do,” she laughs. “And naturally, you would know his work schedule too.”

“What do you think I should say when I call?”

“I don’t know. I would have thought you’d have all your plans and explanations worked out by now. How many times have you been back here, anyway?”

“Um, four last year and then one before I told you. So this will be the seventh.”

“And how many times have you met Kurt?”

“All seven. Except, of course nothing happened between us until after Ed and I split up.”

“Hmm…”

“I’m serious. I could tell he was interested before that, but I was never going to cheat on Ed.”

“Well, if I meet a hot guy today who wants to kiss me, I’m certainly not going to be worried about Ben being upset.”

“That’s your decision.”

“You think it’s wrong?”

“I’m just saying, I felt an obligation to do the right thing by my husband. Just because he was never going to find out and I could possibly excuse my behaviour as being part of a dream, I still couldn’t do it.”

“Okay, okay. I get your point. But Ben and I aren’t serious anyway.”

“Then it’s a non-issue.”

I get out my mobile phone and dial Kurt’s home number. He answers right away.

“Hello?”

My face breaks out into a big smile. “Hi, Kurt? I was just wondering, is Chris with you?”

“Uh, no. Who’s asking?”

“Oh, sorry, it’s Rachel’s friend, Anna. She was asking me to pass on a message.”

“Ah. Well, he didn’t mention visiting today, but sometimes he just drops by. What was the message?”

“She wanted to ask him to bring back some music for her party. I’m guessing maybe from you?”

“That sounds about right. Do you know which albums she wanted?”

“Maybe Beastie Boys and Soundgarden…stuff like that?”

“How soon does she need it?”

“Tonight?”

“Well, if someone can come here to pick it up, I guess I can spare a few albums for a few days. But tell Rachel she has to look after them.”

“Of course. Um, she has to get everything ready this afternoon, so would it be okay if I came? Her other friend Kelsey is with me too.”

He sighs. “Sure. You know where I live?”

“Sorry, no.”

“I’m on Duporth Avenue. The Aqua Apartments. Number three.”

“Great. Thanks! See you soon!”

“Okay.”

Kelsey looks at me, impressed. “You do have this thing down pat. Good thinking.”

“It’s scary how easy it is to lie these days. But also, I stole the music excuse from you. That’s how you introduced yourself to him yesterday.”

“I can’t believe I already met him yesterday as a seventeen-year-old, but it never actually happened. Hey, you don’t lie this much in the future, do you?”

“Of course not. Except for hiding the information I learn here when I’m using it in the future. Clearly I couldn’t tell Ed how I really knew about Maddie.”

She thinks for a second. “Hang on. Did you only contact me last year because you met me back here?”

“Pretty much.
